Recently I visited my family in Southern California. While I was there I really missed my ladies, Olivia and Benson, so I headed over to the home of Ed + Denise Giardina to see their ladies! Their home is unlike any other on the block. Most track homes in suburban Southern California have a front lawn that takes up most the space and a driveway. The Giardinas have a driveway, but the front of their property isn’t covered with a lawn! Much to the chagrin of their neighbors, the Giardina family has huge lavender plants where neighbors believe a lawn aught to be. When I stepped out of the car I was happily overwhelmed by the scent of lavender! And out back they have a gaggle of hens! Each of their hens are really beautiful and happy as every evening they get the run of the yard and chase down bugs and weeds for dinner. The Giardinas also grow veggies and have a big ol’ dog that loves to chase around their ladies. Bravo, Giardina family! Thanks for utilizing the space you inhabit in a way that is eco friendly and brings joy. During my short time there I spotted several humming birds and other native birds enjoying the many blossoms. Ed also said that he often sees lizards darting around the lavender bushes. People, domesticated animals and wildlife can co-exist!
Sadly, today the Giardina family lost their senior hen, Berta… The photo is titled “A Girl and her Hen”… Sending ya’ll some <3 <3 <3
